L’ostéoporose est caractérisée par un amincissement des os qui réduit la solidité des os. Comme ces derniers sont affaiblis, ils sont plus fragiles et risquent davantage de se casser. Les personnes atteintes d’ostéoporose sont plus vulnérables aux fractures, et en particulier aux fractures de fragilité (c’est-à-dire des fractures qui se produisent sans traumatisme ou avec un traumatisme mineur).
